Soya disappointing

We harvested most of the soya beans today, as the pods looked thoroughly dried out. This is the yield from three plants. Hmm, I may have been overly optimistic when I picked out that size container!

On the plus side, we did have an unusually good crop of onions this year. These bulbous beauties, harvested back in July, should keep us going until April/May, and the shallots even longer. There's definitely something comforting about storing food away for the winter.

Some foodstuff has to be eaten straight away, though, not so much because it's perishable, but because it might not survive the onslaught of the goats at St Werburgh's City Farm! We ambled down there this morning on the way back from the allotment, and received an unexpectedly rapturous welcome from the said goats. Before we knew it, they'd pinched a couple of Swiss Chard leaves from out of our bags and would have had more given the chance. We probably should have known better as they played the same trick with leeks last year.

Well, you've done better than I've ever managed with soya beans - mine never even germinated! Having seen your harvest, now I don't feel so bad about it! I saw a frozen food company (can't reacll which one) now sells bags of fresh frozen soya beans just like peas, which might have to suffice. It's not the same as being able to steam your own endamame!
